The dream started with a couple of favors for friends and family. We first staged a house for sale for one of our friends, and it sold the very first day to the first couple that viewed it. Next, neighbors asked us to decorate her daughter’s bedroom and they were so happy we ended up decorating the husband’s 65,000 square foot office. And then when a former advertising client asked us to do her entire house, we thought maybe we should add an interiors division to our design firm.
I started my design career at eight years old when my father had a beautiful dollhouse made for my Christmas present. While ELLE DÉCOR had yet to be published, I still managed to design my dream house fashioning furniture and textiles from my imagination. I studied art at The Milwaukee Art Museum and went on to get my degree from the Honors College at the University of South Carolina with a double major in advertising design and business. Upon graduating, I was hired as an art director at Erwin-Penland Advertising and eventually became associate creative director. I started my own design firm in 1996 and launched a stationery and giftware company in 2006. After three fun, fabulous and crazy years in the business, including an appearance on a NBC reality show, I sold my company and became a licensed artist and designer. I have designed exclusive product collections for Target, American Greetings, Hallmark, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Swoozies, DesignDesign, Inc. and more. After years of designing interiors for friends, family and neighbors, I launched DUO DESIGN STUDIOS with one of my best friends, Gregorie Bylenga.
I began my love affair with design from admiring my grandmother’s beautiful Tudor home in Florida. She had the most amazing taste and it was from her that I learned how to mix old and new, as evidenced by her newly recovered leopard print chair that sat on her mother’s antique oriental rug. Every spring she would pull out white slipcovers and white rugs for the living room and the orientals would go into storage until fall. My family is blessed with historic homes in Charleston and Sullivan’s Island as well, and I learned a lot from the amazing women that oversaw these homes. Decorating became a true passion and I have a desire to help others do the same. Not always being able to purchase original art for my interiors, I took art lessons and paint my own originals from abstracts to landscapes. Now, I carry on my family’s legacy and have a signature style that mixes classic traditional with fresh modern design.
I recently had the opportunity to work with Christa and Gregorie. They helped me renovate and decorate my new home. As a single mom I did not have a lot of time to devote to the project. They were excellent in meeting my busy schedule and I loved how they listened to me and used my ideas to help guide me. I was amazed at how cost effective they are. I often found things on-line and then had them source the item for me and saved money through them! After one meeting they really had a feel for what I liked and my style. They are fantastic to work with and such good ladies! If I had to rate them 1-10 with 10 the best...I would given them a 15! Sally King
I was referred to DUO DESIGN STUDIO by several different friends but thought it would be "too expensive" to hire a designer. I could not have been more wrong about that notion and I could not have been more right to look to DUO DESIGN STUDIO to help me design my master bedroom suite! Christa & Gregorie are AMAZING to work with...they have great ideas & vision but more important to me, they listened to what I wanted - they really wanted to understand my tastes/style/budget before ultimately coming up with a plan for my master bedroom. The master bedroom feels like such a sanctuary for my husband and I...we are so incredibly happy with how beautiful it is! And did I mention how much FUN these ladies are to work with??? Now I'm off to the next project in my home with Christa and Gregorie leading the way --- color, leopard print, lacquer...oh my!!! Sonya Rigsby
I don’t have the space to say all of the wonderful things these girls have accomplished in my home. We renovated our home over the last year and DUO DESIGN STUDIO has been with me throughout the entire journey. We met and discussed my vision. Then they created incredible vision boards and we went for it. Everything came together better than I could have ever dreamed. They are plugged into the best resources in the business and always tried to get me the best deal. Their ability to save me money allowed my to expand their decorating talents to other rooms in the house. I would use them again for any project, big or small. They are energetic, full of unique ideas and went the extra mile in customer service. These girls are THE best. Liz McKissick
